Hate Crime Information

Hate Crimes are defined as a criminal offense against a person or property by an offender's bias against their race,religion, gender, ethnicity, disability, or sexual orientation.

Hate Crime information must be reported for each of the following crimes: criminal homicide, sex offense, robbery, aggravated assault, simple assault, burglary, theft, motor vehicle theft, vandalism, intimidation, arson, and for any other crime involving bodily injury.

It is the policy of Black Hills State University to ensure that the victims and witnesses to crime are aware of their right to report criminal acts to the Public Safety Office and local law enforcement and to report University policy and Code of Conduct violations to the appropriate office. However, if a reporting person reporting requests anonymity, this request must be honored to the extent permitted by law. Accordingly, no information should be included on this form that would personally identify the victim without his/her consent.

Based on information received, BHSU Public Safety will determine the category or incident and the location under which the incident should be reported in the Annual Security Report.

Legislation requires related to the Clery reportable crime statistics be retained for seven years.
