Established in 1896, D.C. Booth Historic Fish Hatchery is one of the oldest operating hatcheries in the United States. Being dedicated to fish culture and resource management, students will assist the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service in clean-up projects around the hatchery.

Help our heroes at the Spearfish Volunteer Fire Department. Students will help these vital members of our community clean the firetrucks, equipment that they use to keep both Black Hills State University and the City of Spearfish safe.
Spearfish Creek is one of the most serene features of the City. With crystal clear waters and fish stocked to the brim, it is a resource that provides a reprieve from the stress of daily life. Students will help make sure that the creek remains pristine and available for recreation by helping pick up trash that found its way into the water and the surrounding shore.
Dedicated to the experiences of both the pioneers and indigenous peoples of the American West, the High Plains Heritage Center offers the opportunity to help with various projects with historical exhibits of the Black Hills. These projects include moving historical items in the building, potentially disassembling/reassembling some exhibits, or cutting down brush in the outdoor pasture.
The City of Spearfish needs help painting their baseball fields. The project will include repainting the infield lines as well as the outfield fences. Students are able to help their new community as well as promote the Great American Pastime in the Northern Hills.
The Historic Matthews Opera House is the center of refinement in Spearfish. Producing numerous plays every year as well as hosting concerts, author talks, and even weddings, this Jewel in the Crown of the Queen City is over a century old and needs students to help maintain the atmosphere of elegance. Cleaning, painting, and moving props will be the name of the game at this landmark of the Black Hills.
Help out the Spearfish Police Department by washing squad cars. This is a great opportunity to give back to Spearfish’s finest, while also learning about how the department assists campus with a variety of programs and services.
